چکیده

The stochastic block model (SBM) is a popular framework for studying community detection in networks. This model is limited by the assumption that all nodes in the same community are statistically equivalent and have equal expected degrees. The degree-corrected stochastic block model (DCSBM) is a natural extension of SBM that allows for degree heterogeneity within communities. This paper proposes a convexified modularity maximization approach for estimating the hidden communities under DCSBM. This approach is based on a convex programming relaxation of the classical (generalized) modularity maximization formulation, followed by a novel doublyweighted `1-norm k-median procedure. We establish non-asymptotic theoretical guarantees for both approximate clustering and perfect clustering. In the special case of SBM, these theoretical results match the best-known performance guarantees of computationally feasible algorithms. Numerically, we provide an efficient implementation of our algorithm, which is applied to both synthetic and real-world networks. Experiment results show that our method enjoys competitive empirical performance compared to the state-of-the-art tractable methods in the literature.

A Sparse Completely Positive Relaxation of the Modularity Maximization for Community Detection

Abstract. In this paper, we consider the community detection problem under either the stochastic block model (SBM) assumption or the degree-correlated stochastic block model (DCSBM) assumption. The modularity maximization formulation for the community detection problem is NP-hard in general. In this paper, we propose a sparse and low-rank completely positive relaxation for the modularity maximi...

Relating modularity maximization and stochastic block models in multilayer networks

Characterizing large-scale organization in networks, including multilayer networks, is one of the most prominent topics in network science and is important for many applications. One type of mesoscale feature is community structure, in which sets of nodes are densely connected internally but sparsely connected to other dense sets of nodes. Two of the most popular approaches for community detect...

Null Models and Modularity Based Community Detection in Multi-Layer Networks

Multi-layer networks are networks on a set of entities (nodes) with multiple types of relations (edges) among them where each type of relation/interaction is represented as a network layer. As with single layer networks, community detection is an important task in multi-layer networks. A large group of popular community detection methods in networks are based on optimizing a quality function kn...

Community detection in networks: Modularity optimization and maximum likelihood are equivalent

We demonstrate an exact equivalence between two widely used methods of community detection in networks, the method of modularity maximization in its generalized form which incorporates a resolution parameter controlling the size of the communities discovered, and the method of maximum likelihood applied to the special case of the stochastic block model known as the planted partition model, in w...

Consistency of community detection in networks under degree-corrected stochastic block models

Community detection is a fundamental problem in network analysis, with applications in many diverse areas. The stochastic block model is a common tool for model-based community detection, and asymptotic tools for checking consistency of community detection under the block model have been recently developed. However, the block model is limited by its assumption that all nodes within a community ...
